A Fresh Start: Douglas Finds a Home and Support with Endeavour Foundation

When Douglas’s NDIS provider could no longer support him, his future felt uncertain. He faced the challenge of finding a new, stable home where he could continue to live independently.

Thanks to the quick response and dedicated support from the Endeavour Foundation Transition Team, Douglas has not only found a new place to live — he has found a home where he feels safe, supported, and connected.

Settling into a New Home

Since moving into his Endeavour Foundation Supported Independent Living (SIL) house, Douglas says life has changed for the better.

“My experience has been really good,” he shares. “My diabetes is getting controlled. It’s more manageable than it was before, and I can start to learn to cook again and be more independent.”

For Douglas, it’s the everyday things that make all the difference. He is enjoying cooking and cleaning, building friendships with his co-tenants, and feeling relaxed at home.

“I get along with the residents, which is good. The staff are friendly and make me laugh a lot. I can go to my support workers here with any problems I want - they are approachable.”

Building Friendships and Independence

Douglas says it’s the people around him who make him feel happy and safe. His new friendships are also important.

“My co-tenant is wonderful! I get along well with him here and at work. Just sitting down to talk with my co-tenant and support workers helps me relax after work.”

When asked what he would say to someone thinking about moving into a SIL home, Douglas doesn’t hesitate:

“I would say go for it! It’s the best thing that could happen to you - health-wise and making new friends. With the support workers at the SIL house, you can always go to them, even anytime at night.”

Support that Makes a Difference

Douglas’ Support Coordinator, Ebony Matthews, says the transition was handled with genuine care.

During this time, we reached out to Endeavour Foundation, given Doug’s long-standing involvement in their supported employment program,” Ebony explains.

“Endeavour responded quickly and with genuine care, offering Doug a place in one of their SIL homes. Since then, they’ve worked closely all stakeholders to make the transition as smooth and supportive as possible.”

The move also opened new opportunities for Douglas’ health and wellbeing.

“Doug has shared that he’s really happy with his new living situation,” Ebony says. “He feels healthier, more relaxed, and less stressed. He’s proud of what he’s achieving, and it’s clear he’s building a great relationship with the team. It’s great to see him thriving in an environment where he feels safe, supported, and empowered.”
