Four people with intellectual disability are set to benefit from a state-of-the-art new home to be built by Endeavour Foundation in Cairns.
The $800,000 specialised development on Hayward Street will be fitted with assistive technologies to support greater independence for people with a disability.
Endeavour Foundation’s Chief Operating Officer, Paula Mayson, said under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which started rolling out in the Cairns region from July 1, more people with a disability were aiming for greater levels of independence.
“For 55 years Endeavour Foundation has supported people with a disability in Cairns so I’m delighted to announce the construction of this amazing new home,” Ms Mayson said.
“This will be the sixth home we have built in the region in seven years, five of those funded by Endeavour Foundation ourselves, which is a total investment of $3.3m and shows our ongoing commitment to supporting far north Queenslanders.
“For people with intellectual disability, living more independently is often a major life goal and one that their parents, family members and service providers such as Endeavour Foundation work hard to help them achieve.
“This environmentally-sustainable home will be built to the Platinum Level of the Livable Housing Australia Guidelines with solar power, battery back-up, skylights and solar hot water systems.
“It’s going to be fitted with assistive technologies and built-in help alarms so the people who live here have the best opportunity to live independently while having help available when needed.”
The fully accessible home will incorporate four bedrooms for people with a disability, including a self-contained unit, and one additional bedroom for support staff.
Russell Boll, one of the people who will be living in the new development, said he’s looking forward to living in a new environment with new neighbours.
“I’m happy and excited,” said Mr Boll, “It’s very close to bus stop with a beautiful garden no steps. I can’t wait to look in the rooms and see the new kitchen – new everything!”
Cairns business Allaro Homes won the tender for the new development and local tradespeople will be employed throughout the construction process.
