Disability Action Week in the Whitsundays

20 September 2016

This year’s Disability Action Week was celebrated with colour bombing, fairy floss and even the chance to cuddle some baby goats, as members of the local community gathered at Endeavour Foundation, Cannonvale.

Hosted by local disability services organisation, Endeavour Foundation, in conjunction with the Department of Communities, the event was designed to raise awareness of disability issues and improve inclusion.

Endeavour Foundation CEO Andrew Donne welcomed guests to the event, noting that 1 in 5 Queenslanders have a disability.

“Disability touches the lives of most people in some way, so Disability Action Week is an important part of the community’s calendar,” Mr Donne said.

“This year’s theme - ‘Inclusion: it’s a game changer’ – chimes perfectly not only with the Paralympic Games, but also with the roll-out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

“The NDIS will arrive in the Whitsundays in November, and there are big changes ahead. The scheme is a springboard to a better Australia – an Australia where decisions about your life are yours to make.

“People with a disability will become a far more visible part of our community as the NDIS makes it easier for them to get involved in community groups and events, join the workforce, take part in learning and training opportunities, live independently and start to achieve other life goals.

“It will signal a sea change in how Australia responds to disability, and not before time.”
