People with a disability in Gladstone have a greater opportunity to be more involved in the community with Endeavour Foundation’s Learning and Lifestyle hub in Gladstone relocated from Meteors Sports Club to new, contemporary premises at Joyner Close in Glen Eden.
With plenty of space for other community organisations to be located alongside, Endeavour Foundation CEO David Barbagallo said the new Learning and Lifestyle also provided a permanent base for 13 people with a disability to develop new life skills, access to technology to enhance communication and access other opportunities in the community.
“This new building, which has been purchased by Endeavour Foundation, provides a greater range of options for local people with a disability,” Mr Barbagallo said.
“The Learning and Lifestyle hub will focus on supporting people to engage in community-based activities, along with life skill development programs on-site. These types of activities and programs go a long way towards assisting people with a disability to build independence, confidence, self-esteem and interpersonal skills.”
Endeavour Foundation Executive General Manager of Disability and Community Services, Gail Davidson, said people who attended the launch saw first-hand the support and activities that were tailored to meet each person’s interests and goals.
“At Gladstone Learning and Lifestyle we are using assistive educational technology such as interactive whiteboards and iPads. New communication technologies offer some wonderful ways for people with a disability to express their own day-to-day choices more easily,” Ms Davidson said.
Well known Gladstone local and former Endeavour Foundation Board member David de Villiers said the Learning and Lifestyle was a great example of what the future could hold for people with a disability, where greater choice, control and independence becomes a part of everyday life.
“We must improve opportunities for people with a disability to be included in all aspects of life because inclusion is the driving philosophical force behind national disability reform,” Mr de Villiers said.
Mr Barbagallo said the opening of the Learning and Lifestyle also signified new opportunities for other community services to use the premises with options to lease space within the 2 Joyner Close site.
