Join our DisabiliTEA events to support a fair, system for people with a disability

Endeavour Foundation is urging the public to attend DisabiliTEA events next week, to support the introduction of a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

The DisabiliTEAs are morning teas and information sessions aimed to educate the public about the benefits of a NDIS.

Endeavour Foundation will host DisabiliTEAs throughout Queensland and in Sydney. Most will be held on Tuesday August 2, following the release of the Productivity Commission’s final report into a NDIS, which will be handed to the Federal Government on Sunday.

The Productivity Commission’s draft report in February recommended the country’s disability sector be overhauled and a NDIS introduced. It slammed the current system as underfunded, unfair and inefficient, with many people with a disability receiving little or no support.

While the Productivity Commission’s final report is expected to strongly recommend a NDIS, the Government is not obliged to accept the recommendations so it is up to the public to lobby the Government to do the right thing and create a fair, just system for Australians with a disability.

A national campaign to lobby the Government has a target of 100,000 signatures to support a NDIS. The current tally is just over 40,000.

“This is a ‘once in a generation’ opportunity to see real change in the sector and revolutionise the way Australia’s 1.4 million people with a disability are supported,” said Endeavour Foundation CEO David Barbagallo, who is also chairman of the Queensland NDIS Campaign Committee and a founding member of the national NDIS Campaign Committee.

“Because of the tough cards already dealt to people with a disability, they are further marginalised and penalised by society’s lack of understanding and support. They are denied the most basic human rights and live out their days with little prospect of relief from the indignity, inconvenience and poverty imposed upon them. It’s time for all Australians to speak up and show we will not stand for this injustice.

“I invite all to come along the various DisabiliTEA events Endeavour Foundation is holding to enjoy a cuppa and cake, learn about NDIS and to sign our registration forms of support.”

NDIS explained

  • 1.4 million Australians have a disability.
  • Currently there are eight different disability systems throughout Australia and people with a disability have no as-of-right entitlement to funding or services.
  • A NDIS would be a national co-ordinated system to provide lifelong support to people with a disability. It would break down the geographical and jurisdictional barriers people with a disability and their families currently face when trying to obtain funding.
  • A NDIS would be person-centred and focused on early intervention and planning.
