Endeavour Foundation launches its first Reconciliation Action Plan

Endeavour Foundation is celebrating Indigenous cultures through art and food at the launch of its first Reconciliation Action Plan in Bundaberg today, during NAIDOC Week.

Endeavour Foundation CEO David Barbagallo said “the Plan is our first step in the journey to better understanding and increasing our awareness of First Australian Peoples.”

“It is also about working towards creating an organisation without barriers to the support services, employment and vocational training that we provide.”

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians are up to three times more likely to have a disability than non-Indigenous Australians.

Endeavour Foundation has created the plan in the lead-up to the Queensland rollout of the National Disability Insurance Scheme in 2016. The organisation has prioritised making its services accessible and relevant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, as one of its highest priorities.

“Choice, control and independence are at the heart of the NDIS, and that is also our aspiration for the kinds of supports we would like to provide for Indigenous Australians,” Mr Barbagallo said.

As part of the launch, beautiful artwork was commissioned for the organisation’s Reconciliation Action Plan, and was jointly painted by Jaularoi artist Susie Klein and Nola McPherson, a Kamilaroi woman who had been supported by Endeavour Foundation in Roma, and who recently passed away.

The Plan has been endorsed by Reconciliation Australia and affirms the organisation’s desire to make its disability and community services more accessible for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with a disability, and to ensure long-term sustainable engagement.

Guests who attended the launch today include local Elder Mervyn Johnson, Member for Bundaberg Leanne Donaldson MP and Bundaberg Regional Council’s Deputy Mayor David Batt.
