What is the Royal Commission?

03 October 2019

The Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability is an important opportunity for people with disability to have serious issues addressed, including human rights, personal safety, access to quality services and social inclusion.

It will explore issues relating to violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation of people with disability in homes with families, the justice system, schools, sporting clubs, workplaces, group homes, hospitals, community group and with service providers.

Free advocates and lawyers to provide support

Some people may want to talk to the Royal Commission but need more information about what they can expect or may want someone to speak on their behalf.

Given the success of the commission is dependent on people sharing their experiences, a grant of $20m is available to National Disability Advocacy Program (NDAP) organisations to provide a safe, reliable and accessible support. This three-year investment demonstrates the commitment of the commission to truly reach and support people who want to engage with them. We will share more information about these organisations when available.

In the meantime, you can access free and independent support via:

  • National Legal Aid (NLA) call 1800 771 800.
  • National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services (NATSILS)
    call (03) 9418 5928.

NLA and NATSILS can offer advocacy, information and support to people who are thinking of sharing their experiences with the Royal Commission.
