Townsville woman has winning down to a fine art

28 September 2016

Townsville woman Verena Smith is this week celebrating a clean sweep at the Kith n Kin Annual Disability Art Awards, for her portrait ‘Princess Krystal’.

Surprised and delighted to be awarded first place in the ‘Faces’ category, she was then judged Overall Winner of the 2016 awards.

“You never know what you can do, until you try. It’s incredible and fantastic – it’s because I try very hard,” Verena said.

To anyone who thinks they don’t have the abilities to pursue their dream hobby, she said, “just get started folks, that’s what it takes”.

Supported by local disability services provider, Endeavour Foundation, Verena has been interested in art for many years.

Support worker Judith Brady said that her win was ‘well deserved’.

“The subjects of Verena’s paintings are whatever she is interested in at the time – inspired perhaps by a song, an event or a family member.

“Verena then likes to go to the library to read books on the current subject, before making a trip to the art supplier for a quality canvas. She works diligently on these pieces for weeks at a time.”

2016 has already been a very successful year for Verena. Her painting – titled ‘Winter’ – was awarded second prize after being entered into the Townsville Show Art Awards by the proud team at Endeavour Foundation.
