Students dig deep for Endeavour Foundation

21 September 2016

Students from Townsville Grammar School recently exceeded all expectations as they made their Community Service Day really count for people with a disability.

Working at Endeavour Foundation’s Townsville Learning and Lifestyle, they not only cleared the garden of weeds and prepared a new bed for plants, but brightened up the day for people supported at the service.

Stephen Rufus, Support & Operations Manager with Endeavour Foundation, said that their efforts meant “more than they can ever know”.

“We were so impressed by the genuine interest demonstrated by the students, and it was wonderful seeing them just having a chat and learning more about disability simply through interacting. It was a valuable experience all round – the people we support were completely delighted by their company, while the students were able to see, first hand, what life is like for people with an intellectual disability and, hopefully, challenge any negative perceptions.

“Anything that increases awareness and promotes inclusion is so welcome, and we hope that this will be the first of many such opportunities.”

Thanking the students for their fundraising, Stephen said that their generosity and enthusiasm was “heart-warming”.

“A donation of $500 has enabled us to enhance the garden even further and provide more interactive activities on site. We are extremely grateful.”

Endeavour Foundation is an independent not-for-profit organisation providing support to people with a disability throughout Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria in accommodation, employment and learning, training, vocational and lifestyle opportunities.
