Keep the peninsula beautiful with Endeavour Foundation

17 August 2016

Endeavour Foundation Redcliffe has said that Keep Australia Beautiful Week (22- 28 August) is the perfect time for an electronic spring clean.

Nick Ferré, manager of the local site, said that diverting as much electronic waste as possible from landfill is crucial to protecting the environment.

“With homes across the peninsula hoarding everything from defunct televisions, computers, printers, VCRs and DVD players our free e-waste recycling service is ideally placed to dispose of unused electrical appliances,” Nick said.

By 2020, electronic waste sent to landfill in Australia is expected to treble to around 700 million items. E-waste can contain toxic and hazardous materials such as batteries, mercury, lead, cadmium, and brominated fire retardants which have a significant negative impact on the environment, if not disposed of correctly.

“Fortunately we can all be part of the solution – by being proactive about recycling. Endeavour Foundation safely dismantles in excess of 150 tonnes of e-waste per month across three recycling operations located in Townsville, Redcliffe and Southport, and recycles around 97% of the commodities,” Nick said.

“Additionally, with employment rates for people with a disability standing at around a disappointingly low 54 per cent, compared with 83 per cent for people without disabilities[i], our service offers meaningful opportunities for participation in the workplace and the wider community for 61 employees.”

“We know that work can provide people with a sense of purpose, an opportunity to contribute and gain skills, improve confidence and self-esteem. We focus on what people can do - their strengths and capabilities – because we believe that it’s a critical part of an inclusive, empowering community.”

Endeavour Foundation Redcliffe, located at 46 High St, Kippa Ring, welcomes e-waste drop-off at the Beach Street entrance, Monday to Friday, 8am to 3pm. Call 07 3284 0199 for more information.
