Stadium Mackay hosting Endeavour Foundation’s sports ability day

More than 100 people of all abilities will gather at BB Print Stadium in Mackay this Friday to participate in Endeavour Foundation’s sports ability day for Disability Action Week (September 15 – 22).

Athletes from Mackay and around the Whitsundays will compete across a range of team and individual sports, including bocce, sitting volleyball, tag football, goal kicking, the obstacle course and more.

Manager of Service Delivery John-Paul Cluney said it would be a community-focussed day that celebrated the differing abilities of all participants.

“Endeavour Foundation enjoys fantastic community support in Mackay and we couldn’t put on something like this without local business and organisations getting behind it,” Mr Cluney said.

“The Mackay Regional Council has backed this day by allowing us to use the stadium and local businesses are sending volunteers and refreshments to make sure our athletes are well-supported.

“A sports ability day is excellent for both the mental and physical health of participants because they get to socialise with friends and meet other members of the community as well as exert themselves in team and individual sports.

“Community participation works both ways as it not only enriches the lives of participants but our society is also enriched when it becomes more inclusive.”

Blake Heinrich works for Endeavour Foundation in Mackay and said he was looking forward to meeting new people on the day.

“My best sports are AFL and Rugby League,” said Mr Heinrich, “I can’t wait to score five tries in the tag footy game.

“I like learning new techniques, having fun with others and teaching others how to play.”

There will be awards in various sporting categories and all athletes will receive a medal and a goody bag to acknowledge their participation on the day.
