Life’s an adventure, and I want to be part of it

Hi, my name’s Emma,

If I had to describe myself in one word, it would be ‘adventurer’. I’m always jetting around to different places. The worlds a big place and I want to see it all. I find that I learn a lot while I’m travelling.

Sometimes people are surprised to find out I have three different disabilities. I don’t let my disabilities hold me back though. Not at all.

I do sometimes struggle with things though – especially with my mild intellectual disability. It can be a bit hard to explain, but I’ll try… It’s like I understand what people say, but only to a point, after that I get confused. Kind of like I don’t get the whole story, I just get a part of it.

With time, I’ve accepted how things are. I know I’m special. I rock it.

If I could give some advice to the people who are reading this who don’t have a disability, it would be that we want to be included. We don’t want to be segregated. We want to get out there and be part of it. The best thing you can do is welcome and accept people with disabilities.

I used to work in an office, but I didn’t like it all that much. I don’t know how people do it, sitting still all day – it’s so boring! I’d much rather be up and about, walking around and being active.

That’s why I now work for Endeavour Foundation doing food packaging. I’m only new, but the people are really nice and it keeps me active. It’s very different to an office!
