What you need to know about Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs)

7th February 2022

With Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) now an integral part of our COVID-19 response, it is important that you are across which brands to use, the different types available and their effectiveness.

Types of RATs

Saliva RAT: a throat swab is placed inside your mouth and then into a chemical solution

Oral Fluid RAT: oral fluid is spit into a provided funnel or tube

Nasal Swab RAT: a nose swab is placed inside your nostril and then into a chemical solution

The Rapid Antigen Test kits that we use across the organisation are all TGA approved and of the nasal swab variety.

Approved COVID-19 RAT kits

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has approved the below COVID-19 self-tests (home use tests) for supply in Australia and has categorised them according to their clinical sensitivity.

This is in alignment with technical specifications published by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the European Commission. For this reason, the Rapid Antigen Test you use needs to be TGA approved. Only TGA approved RAT kits are permitted to be sold in Australia.

Refer each specific RAT kit below to learn its clinical sensitivity, date approved and instructions on how to use it.

  • The performance requirements – aligned with technical specifications published by the World Health Organisation and the European Commission – includes a minimum clinical sensitivity of at least 80 per cent.
  • This is based on the test’s positive per cent agreement (PPA) – the proportion of individuals that produced a positive test result using a COVID-19 rapid antigen self-test, compared to those with a positive result by PCR test.
  • The theory is that the greater the sensitivity, the greater chance it has at detecting COVID-19, the less chance of a false negative.
  • “Acceptable sensitivity” indicates a clinical sensitivity greater than 80 per cent PPA, “high sensitivity” greater than 90 per cent PPA and “very high sensitivity” greater than 95 per cent PPA.
  • As time passes, and access and availability increase, it would be best to use a RAT that has the highest performance that you can find and afford. However, experts say it’s important not to stress if you can’t find the exact brand you were looking for. A test is better than no test.
