NDIS

A new era of choice and control

The National Disability Insurance Scheme significantly changes the way disability services are funded and delivered across Australia. This nationwide reform puts you at the centre of the decision making process about how you want to live your life, your choice of supports and who you would like to deliver your supports. It is designed to provide you with choice, control and independence.

Changing to a new way of doing things can be confusing and difficult to navigate. We have a range of information and resources designed to help answer some questions you may have about the NDIS, how it will affect you and the types of help that is available to you as you move across to the NDIS.

What is the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) launched in July 2013, following years of discussion about the need for a major reform of disability services in Australia to address inequity in funding and services across the states. The Scheme is overseen by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). The NDIA has pledged that no-one will be worse off under the new system. In fact, many people with a disability will be able to access services they never have before.

The NDIS focuses on the person with disability across their whole life. For the first time, people with disability in Australia get to choose where and how to access their supports. Funding goes directly to the individual to purchase the services they need, rather than funding being directly applied to service providers. A plan is created for each eligible NDIS participant based on specific individual needs and progress goals.

The NDIS is rolling out progressively throughout Australia and will be fully implemented by 2019. It is important to note that NDIS funding will replace current disability services funding.
