Mackay jobs surge predicted under NDIS

17 August 2016

Up to 750 jobs could be created in the Mackay and Whitsundays region when the National Disability Insurance Scheme takes effect from 1 November this year.

Estimates from the agency responsible for administering the scheme, the NDIA, suggest that the workforce currently engaged in providing disability supports locally will meet just 40-50% of demand.

Kate Lemke, Service Development & Innovation Manager with local disability service provider Endeavour Foundation, said that the benefits for the whole community are ‘immeasurable’.

“This is a hugely exciting new era for people with a disability, but the knock-on effect for employment in the region will also be significant.

“For anyone with a genuine interest in supporting people with a disability to achieve their aspirations, there will be real opportunities to make a difference.

“It’s a rewarding and challenging work environment and we need people who are caring, authentic and trustworthy, because our customers deserve no less.

“Working at Endeavour Foundation isn’t just a ‘job’, so we’re always on the lookout for people who share our values.

“Through working in partnership with our customers – and encouraging imagination, creativity and collaboration within our teams – we can achieve the best possible outcomes,” Kate said.

Endeavour Foundation is an independent not-for-profit organisation, committed to working together with people with a disability so that they can live life to the full.

Kate said that while the transition to the NDIS can appear daunting, it is the key to “building a better, more inclusive, Australia”.

“The beauty of the NDIS is that decisions about your life and your plan are yours to make. This is the first step on an exciting journey, and we have the highest hopes for what it will deliver for people with a disability.”
