Early NDIS roll-out ‘good news’

26 May 2017

Endeavour Foundation Chief Executive Andrew Donne has welcomed news that the NDIS will roll out earlier than expected in Ipswich, Bundaberg and Rockhampton.

“The vast majority of people with a disability and their families are keen to get up and running and see what the NDIS can do for them,” Mr Donne said.

“Waiting and wondering has taken its toll on some people, and for them this is great news.

“If people with a disability and families are panicking that they’re now under pressure to start their NDIS planning, we urge them to reach out for support to assist in the process. There is no pressure for people to begin planning before they are ready.

“There is lots of information available, through the NDIA and support providers, who have been working hard to assist people through the transition and have experience of the NDIS in other regions.

“We welcome efforts by the Queensland and Commonwealth governments and the NDIA to speed the process along for people in need of support.

“We appreciate that this is being balanced with a commitment to quality.

“With regard to the lower than expected take-up of the NDIS in other regions, we know that not everyone who qualifies has completed their planning process as yet.

“It’s important to make sure all eligible people understand the process and can gain access, including people from diverse cultural groups.”

“We hope that the news of ‘unused capacity’ will be reported with as much enthusiasm as predictions that uptake was going to exceed expectations,” Mr Donne concluded.
