Discover how James’ path to photography is thriving with the right support.
James Norquay does not see the world the way most photographers do.
But that is exactly what makes his work exceptional.
At 26, James is a cancer survivor. He is also legally blind and an emerging photographer. His talent has grown from a useful skill into creative expression.
After surviving brain cancer at just 10 years old, he was left with only 2% vision.
What could have been a barrier became a stepping stone towards an unexpected passion.
“When I look through the camera, it feels like 101% vision. It is my way of seeing the world,” James said.
A Lens for Life
James’ photography journey began as a practical necessity, zooming in on bus timetables, menus and street signs.
But during the quiet of the 2020 pandemic, he picked up his camera more often, not just to adapt, but to create.
His work became a way to express emotion, colour and light, capturing moments others might overlook.
“Behind the camera, for me, it is like home. It feels like where I am supposed to be. I enjoy every moment, visualising the world through my lens,” James said.
Photography gave James more than magnification.
It gave him independence, purpose and a way to tell stories that matter.

Capturing Inclusion in Action
Until recently, James received Disability Employment Support (DES) through Community Solutions, a part of Endeavour Foundation.
Today, he works alongside Endeavour Foundation as a photographer, where he captures life at the Learning and Lifestyle hubs and Business Solutions sites.
His images document people with intellectual disability building skills, friendships and confidence.
“If people with disability are given space, opportunity and encouragement, extraordinary things happen,” James reflects.
His work showcases the power of inclusion in action.
Jamie Lyons, James’ Career Development Advisor at Community Solutions, said:
“Our role is to create the environment where talent can flourish. James has shown that with the right support, people with disability do not just succeed, they redefine what is possible.”
“It is a privilege to watch him capture these stories through his lens.” Jamie added.
For Endeavour Foundation, James’ story is not about services. It is about the lasting impact of opportunity.
He was empowered early in his journey and now uses his talent to uplift and represent others.

A Creative Career Shaped by Connection
James brings more than technical skill to his shoots. He brings empathy and lived experience.
Many people at Endeavour Foundation’s hubs have never had a professional photo taken. James knows how to make them feel comfortable.
“I tell people that I am legally blind with 2% vision. But with my camera, I have got 101% vision.” James said.
“I make sure to get all the information, all the details and communicate clearly with everyone.”
Through his photography, James helps to:
- Showcase the everyday power of inclusion
- Create authentic, people-first images
- Highlight real stories happening at Endeavour Foundation
- Show families and Support Coordinators the impact of skill-building programs
At the same time, it builds his portfolio and helps him develop a sustainable, long-term creative career.

Inclusion Is not a Buzzword
James’ journey shows what Endeavour Foundation strives for every day: inclusion, possibility and confidence.
“People living with a disability can do whatever they want in life. It just takes a bit of adapting. I am legally blind, but that does not define what I can do,” James says.
“There is always a choice: stay in bed or find a way to thrive. I chose to thrive.”
Jamie reflects on the broader impact:
“Seeing James find his passion and thrive reminds me why we do what we do. When we provide guidance, encouragement and opportunities, people with disability can achieve incredible things.”
“James’ creativity and determination inspire everyone around him.” Jamie added.

Opening Doors and Building Dreams
James credits his career development to guidance from Community Solutions.
“It was Jamie who pointed me in the direction. I told him what I wanted to do, and he created the path for me.” He smiled.
Having the right support made all the difference. Knowing he could reach out to our team meant James could focus on building his career, not navigating it alone.
“We began by looking into retail work. Then, he introduced me to the marketing and media department at Endeavour Foundation. Jamie went above and beyond.” Said James.
This support turned a challenging path into a meaningful opportunity.
James’ journey from uncertainty to professional photographer highlights a real story of inclusion and the impact on his life.
“A year ago, I was finding it hard. I did not know where to go or how to let people know I was a photographer. I was at the point of giving up.
“But now, working with Endeavour Foundation, there is not a word for how it feels. It is exhilarating. I feel truly part of a team.” Said James.
With his guide dog, Jonah, by his side, James now spends time doing what he loves, capturing life and people in their most authentic moments.

Reach your Goals with Endeavour Foundation
