What Is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a type of NDIS funding that supports you in your home to live as independently as possible. It is about having the right support for daily tasks like cooking, managing appointments or personal care.

While SIL is frequently offered in shared homes with 24/7 support, it can also be for living on your own. The funding covers the cost of support staff, but it does not cover rent, groceries or other daily living expenses.

Your living choices include:

  • Shared or group accommodation
  • Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)
  • A house you own or rent
  • Accommodation through the Department of Housing and similar services

Your Questions Answered (FAQs)

To be eligible for SIL funding, you must:

  • Be an NDIS participant
  • Be aged over 18 and require access to 24/7 support to live independently
  • Undergo an assessment, such as a Functional Assessment, to show your support needs

It covers the cost of support staff for personal care, daily living skills (like cooking and cleaning), medication help and community access. It does not cover rent, groceries or utilities.

  • SIL (Supported Independent Living): Funding for support services
  • SDA (Specialist Disability Accommodation): Funding for the actual home itself, as required for people with high support needs

You may be eligible for both SIL and SDA funding, depending on your circumstances.

Yes. You have the choice of where you live, who you live with and the type of support you receive. We work with you to ensure you are compatible with your housemates.

A Roster of Care is a vital document in the SIL process. It details the hours and types of support you need and how support workers will be rostered to meet those needs. The NDIS uses a Roster of Care to assess your funding requirements.
