An update on paving the road to mainstream employment for people with disability

News
media-release

In an ongoing effort to bridge the gap between people with disability and mainstream employment opportunities within the hospitality industry, Dr Ashokkumar Manoharan and his research team at Flinders University are delving deeper into the dynamics of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Building upon their initial research phase which focused on identifying the barriers and challenges faced by both employers and potential employees, the team is now exploring strategies to foster inclusive workplace environments and promote sustainable employment outcomes. This update delves into the ongoing research initiatives spearheaded by Dr Manoharan and his team, highlighting their commitment to paving the road to mainstream employment for people with disability.

The below update is provided by Flinders University. This update outlines the ongoing research initiatives of Dr Ashokkumar Manoharan and the research team from Flinders University.

Extending insights through a nationwide survey

Following the initial phase of interviews with employers, industry peak bodies (e.g., AHA, Clubs SA), and disability employment service providers, we undertook a nationwide survey of SMEs in hospitality which enabled us to validate and expand upon our initial findings.

This broader perspective also provided us with additional insights into the challenges and opportunities employers in SMEs in the hospitality sector throughout the country perceive in providing employment for people with disability.

Equipping employers through collaborative toolkit development

Building on insights drawn from the nationwide survey, we engaged stakeholders in a co-design phase. The objective was to co-design a toolkit that streamlines and supports employers in SMEs to employ people with disability in the hospitality sector.

Building on insights drawn from the nationwide survey, we engaged stakeholders in a co-design phase. The objective was to co-design a toolkit that streamlines and supports employers in SMEs to employ people with disability in the hospitality sector.

The toolkit serves as a practical guide for employers within the SME hospitality sector and has been tailored to address the unique needs of SMEs. By involving stakeholders in its development, we ensured its practicality, relevance, and alignment with the industry's dynamics.

Facilitating partnerships via the stakeholder networking event

Subsequently, we held a highly successful stakeholder networking event.

At this event, Eric Teed, Executive General Manager - Work, Endeavour Foundation, officially launched the Toolkit. This event served as a platform for disseminating the co-designed toolkit and fostering critical connections between employers and disability employment service providers.

The event not only provided valuable insights but also acted as a catalyst for capacity building and the implementation of best practices in job matching within the hospitality sector.

Sustaining momentum for long-term impact

We are not merely focused on short-term outcomes but are dedicated to creating a sustained shift in the employment landscape of SMEs in hospitality. The toolkit and the connections forged during the Stakeholder Networking Event collectively form a foundation for enduring partnerships and continuous progress. Our efforts are centered on cultivating a culture of inclusivity and diversity that translates into meaningful employment opportunities for people with disability and enhanced workplace dynamics.

Flinders University researchers extend our sincere gratitude to all stakeholders who have actively contributed to this program, and we look forward to continued collaboration and collective action in pursuing a more inclusive and equitable employment environment for people with disability.
