The topic of health-related funding for people with disability regularly creates confusion. We provide much-needed clarity.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can be complicated.

When you throw health needs into the picture, it can become even more complex.

Who funds various health-related needs, supports and services for people with disability?

We are constantly asked questions of this nature, so we have created a handy guide that dives into the topic.

NDIS Funding vs Healthcare System Support

As a general rule, keep in mind the following:

  • The NDIS funds supports that are required due to a person’s disability.
  • The healthcare system assists with clinical and medical treatment.

The table below outlines this in more detail.

What you might need Who funds it
Aids and equipment like wheelchairs, hearing aids, adjustable beds etc. NDIS
Medication Health care system
Prosthetics and artificial limbs NDIS
Clinical services and treatment of health conditions Health care system
Hospital stays Health care system
Visits to your GP Health care system
Surgery Health care system
Home modifications NDIS
Disability support workers NDIS
Palliative and geriatric care Health care system
Dental costs Health care system

Disability vs Rehabilitation

With the NDIS, grey areas abound.

When it comes to the subject of health needs, the complexity largely revolves around the use of allied health services and other therapy, including physiotherapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy.

A key question to ask yourself is: Is this support required as a result of my disability, or is it needed as a result of an accident or injury that requires rehabilitation?

If it is directly linked to your disability and has been deemed a reasonable and necessary support, the NDIS may fund it.

If the support is part of your rehabilitation, the NDIS is unlikely to fund it.
