There is always something happening in Cameron Fetter’s world, whether it is playing music, catching up with friends over coffee, or heading out into the community.

Cameron, who is vision impaired, has been part of the Endeavour Foundation community since he was 15.

Over the years, he has built a full and active life through Learning and Lifestyle programs, community access, and regular social dinners, forming strong connections along the way.

“Being part of Endeavour Foundation means everything to me,” Cameron said.

“I feel safe and fantastic.”

As Endeavour Foundation celebrates 75 years, Cameron’s story shows what choice, control and the right support can make possible.

A Home That Supports Independence

A major milestone in Cameron’s journey was moving into his current supported home in Toowoomba, a space designed to suit his needs and support his independence in everyday life.

“I was very excited,” he said.

“I have a flat driveway that is safe for me to walk to the taxi, wider hallways for me to move around the house freely and space in my bedroom to have my keyboard to play whenever I feel like to have a practice.”

The accessible layout has made a noticeable difference, with Cameron now able to move confidently through his home and take on more of his daily routine.

“Being able to have my visually impaired aids like the kettle tipper and liquid level beeper enables me to make my coffee independently,” he said.

Support worker Awien Thiik, who has supported Cameron since 2022, has seen that growth firsthand.

“Cameron is now able to use his aids to independently make his own tea or coffee. He can move freely to the fridge, fix himself a light lunch and manage his laundry with minimal support,” Awien said.

My Home, My Life In Action

Cameron’s home is part of Endeavour Foundation’s My Home, My Life (MHML) program, an initiative focused on creating accessible homes that give people with disability greater choice, independence, and security.

Since 2020, Endeavour Foundation has invested $33 million in the MHML program, creating more than 60 new or renovated homes and benefiting the lives of more than 200 people who now proudly have a place of their own.

The impact of that thoughtful design is clear in Cameron’s day-to-day life, allowing him to move freely, complete tasks independently, and enjoy a space that reflects his personality and passions.

It has also given Cameron something deeply personal, a space of his own where he can relax and do what he loves.

Sharing His Love For Music

Music is at the heart of Cameron’s story and something that brings him, and those around him, a great deal of joy.

He began playing instruments at just three years old and has continued to build his skills over time.

From keyboard and guitar to learning the ukulele, music has always been a constant in his life.

“I enjoy the noise of the instruments,” he said.

Cameron regularly shares his talent with others, performing each week at a nursing home where his music lifts the spirits in the room.

“I play every Friday at the nursing home,” he said.

“I enjoy playing for other people.”

At home, his keyboard is never far away, ready whenever he feels like playing, practicing, or simply enjoying the moment.

“Even if I am visually impaired, this does not stop me from living my life,” Cameron said.

“I’m talented. I play the keyboard very well and can sing rock and roll and country music.”

Redefining Independence

Outside the home, Cameron enjoys a busy and social life and makes the most of every opportunity to stay connected.

He spends time with friends, heads out for coffee or lunch, and takes part in community activities.

Support worker Awien Thiik said it’s incredible to see the confidence Cameron has out in his community.

“Cameron likes to know who is supporting him. He appreciates respect, staff who understand his routine, and allow him to make his own choices,” Awien said.

“People think they cannot do things or be independent. Working with Cameron has proven this is not true. He is confident, independent, talented and very social.”

Looking back, Cameron is clear about the role Endeavour Foundation has played in his life.

“Endeavour Foundation keeps me safe and healthy, supports me to be independent and the people I live with are like my family.”

Cameron’s story shows what is possible when people are supported to live life their way, with choice, control, and the freedom to follow what they love.
