Planning a fun adventure? These top tips for travellers with disability can help to make your journey smoother.
Exciting. Eye-opening. Enjoyable.
These are just some of the words used to describe the experience of travelling.
The thought of embarking on a journey as a young person to somewhere new can feel exciting, but it can also create feelings of worry and fear. For young people with disability, the question of accessibility comes to mind.
With the right planning, support and confidence, young explorers can navigate new places with ease.
There are plenty of resources to help ensure a smooth journey, whether it is a short trip to another city or an international adventure. Websites like Accessible Travel Online and Travel Without Limits offer helpful guidance on accessible transport and accommodation.
But since nothing beats first-hand experience, we asked six seasoned travellers to share their top travel tips for young people with disability who are thinking about embarking on a new adventure.
Ed, an employee at our Kew Business Solutions in Melbourne, found a love for travel as a child when he would holiday with his parents.
Since 2000, he has been travelling independently, embracing public transport and even flying alone.
Ed’s first solo trip was nerve-wracking, but he quickly learned how to manage his travels efficiently.
Alicia has been an employee at our Mackay Business Solutions for nearly two years and recently enjoyed a memorable trip with her family to Brisbane.
From fireworks at the riverfront to shopping sprees, Alicia made the most of her trip.
Since starting at our Cairns Business Solutions in 2015, Anthony has gained confidence in travelling.
His first solo trip was volunteering for Endeavour Foundation at a Brisbane Broncos rugby league game with the assistance of his Employment Coach. Now, he is planning a long holiday in America and Canada.
Anthony, otherwise known as ‘Gessa’, works at our Cairns Business Solutions, too. He loves visiting Thursday Island – it is where his mother lives – and often makes the journey alone.
Anthony also enjoys trips to Townsville and Brisbane to watch his favourite National Rugby League (NRL) team, the North Queensland Cowboys, play.
Paul is another Cairns Business Solutions employee, and he also lives in an Endeavour Foundation home.
He enjoys taking short trips and visiting his family in Adelaide. Sometimes, Paul’s support worker assists with packing.
Russell, who we support in his home and in the community, and who has been an employee at our Cairns Business Solutions for more than 10 years, recently visited China.
With the support of his sister, his trips are planned to make sure everything runs smoothly.
Travelling is a fun way to develop your independence and confidence. With the right preparation, anyone can explore the world.
