NDIS Plan reassessment

NDIS Plan reassessments (formerly known as plan reviews) are used by the NDIS to work out how much funding you are to receive.

Getting ready for your NDIS Plan reassessment

For most people on the NDIS, you will do a plan reassessment every year.

Plan reassessments are an opportunity to check if your supports are working for you and how your goals are being met. Your NDIS Plan won’t stay the same ‐ it will change over time as your needs change. Plan reassessments are important because they make sure that your NDIS Plan is working for you.

Our top tips for your plan reassessment

Be prepared

Like many things when it comes to the NDIS - preparation is key! You will likely need to get your documents in order for you NDIS Plan reassessment. Your documents need to show how you've been meeting or progressing towards your goals. You will also want to think about what’s worked and what hasn’t since your last review.

Think ahead

This one is very important - you’ll want to think about what lies ahead for you. Have your goals changed? Do you foresee a big life change like wanting to move out of home? Is there anything that could affect your unpaid carers ability to support you at their usual level? By thinking ahead you can give the planner an idea of what supports you might need in the year to come.

Be honest

Something we see quite often is people who downplay how much support they need. We live in a society that encourages people to battle through and often in private. If you’re not honest with your planner, they won’t know how much support you really need.

FAQs

I keep hearing that people sometimes get less after a plan reassessment ‐ is this true?

There’s been much anxiety around getting less funding resulting from a plan reassessment.

The outcomes are different from person to person.

One thing we can say with certainty is that great preparation increases your chance of getting a plan that you are happy with.

That said, it can depend on the experience of the planners as well.

Who will conduct my plan reassessment?

If you’re aged 7 ‐ 65, your plan reassessment conversation will be conducted by either an NDIS Planner or a Local Area Coordinator.

If you’re under 7, it will be with an Early Childhood Early Intervention Partner.

What if my circumstances change and I need to review my plan early?

If your personal circumstances change significantly and this affects the supports you need from the NDIS, you can request a plan reassessment at any time by completing the change of circumstances form.

This is different to being unhappy with the supports you receive in your budget. If you’re unhappy with a decision, you’ll need to get a review of decisions. We've put together a blog on what to do if you are unhappy with your NDIS Plan.

What if I’m not happy with my plan?

If you’re not happy with your NDIS Plan, you should speak to your main point of contact from the NDIS. In most instances this would be your Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or Support Coordinator. They should be able to provide clarification and help you make the most of the funding. Under some circumstances you may be able to request a Plan Variation which is a minor change to just part of your plan. You can also contact the NDIS directly and they will supply you with written reasons why they made the funding decisions they made.

If you’re not happy with this, you can ask for it to be looked at. This is called an internal review. The people doing the internal review will be people who were not involved in creating your plan. A good thing to note is that you only have three months from when you got your plan to request an internal review.

Can I use a Support Coordinator to help me prepare?

Absolutely. If you received funding in your first plan for a Support Coordinator, they will be able to help you prepare for your second plan.

What do I need to take to my NDIS Plan Reassessment?

Here is a list of the key things you should take to your NDIS Plan Reassessment:

  • A copy of your current NDIS Plan.
  • Information for your service providers about what supports they have delivered and what supports you need to reach your goals for the next year. You can request this directly from your providers.
  • If you have a decision maker, you should take them to your meeting.
  • You can also take a family member, support worker or friend who knows you well and can help you in the review meeting.
