Government must support families to stay together

Endeavour Foundation Chief Executive Officer David Barbagallo has made the following statement about a couple has put their son up for adoption because of a lack of state government support.

“While this is an extreme case, it is no surprise to our support staff. They talk with many families who are sadly considering State Care as an option - not because they don’t care for their children or love them, but because they can’t obtain the support they need to keep functioning.

Families need respite, support services, financial aid, counselling support, and help with the cost of assessments and therapy.

Only 1 in 25 Qld families currently have funding for their child to access support for specific developmental needs.

Some have been on the waiting list for eight years. Most wait too long to seek any help, because they don’t want to burden the taxpayer. The results are devastating: broken marriages, kids leaving school too young, increased mental health problems in the family home, and finances stretched beyond what they can afford.

Parents are tired and burnt out from being a carer and therapist at home with no break. Single parents quickly run through their leave allowance until it is impossible to hold down a job.

The Child Safety system is not an answer to the growing prevalence of sensory disabilities such as autism. We’ve had more than enough time to read the Carmody Report which spelled out the plight of desperate families. Telling them to wait for the NDIS is not good enough.”
