Meet Kellan

Kellan Thomas was recently given the chance to exhibit some of his drawings at the new Brisbane City Council library at Brisbane Square. Kellan, who has autism, was asked to exhibit at the exhibition by his Endeavour ‘big brother’ and artist Louis Robert (Support Worker). The exhibition was organised by the Sovereign Space art collective comprised of Queensland College of Art students. The title of the show, De-tourism, was a term that loosely suggests that one needn’t have to travel far to appreciate the poetry of the everyday.

Kellan’s passionate, and somewhat mysterious, knowledge and interest in electronic equipment is one of the fascinating things about his personality. His rather quirky yet technically detailed drawings of DVD players, sound and game systems perfectly fit the criteria of the De-tourism exhibition.

Kellan, who had long been planning to turn his brothers’ old room into his personal High Definition cinema and games room, had compiled the drawings to map out the room and document the gear needed.

The exhibition ran for just over a month earlier this year and was hung on the walls of the library.

Other artists who contributed to the show were Natasha Cordasic, David Creed, Melissa Falvey, Andrew Forsyth, Kay Lawrence, Hiromi Tango and Louis.

It was a great opportunity for Kellan to get public recognition and acceptance within the setting of a public art exhibition that included some well known Brisbane artists.

With courage and determination Kellan continues to embrace his talents.

Kellan is truly an inspiration to us all.
