College provides career pathways in the disability sector
Nine year 11 and 12 students are undertaking Endeavour Foundation’s trial of School-based Traineeships, designed to give students an insight into working in the disability sector..
Each trainee will spend 48 days throughout the year working as an Endeavour Foundation employee at one of the Queensland services. At the end of the traineeship the students will walk away with a Certificate III in Disability.
The aim of the initiative is to boost interest in the sector and encourage youngsters to keep disability work in mind for job prospects.
One enthusiastic trainee is 16 year-old Erin Noolan, who is working at the Learning & Lifestyle service in Townsville.
“My four year-old sister, Bethany, has Down Syndrome … I’ve wanted to do this type of work since she was born,” Erin said.
Erin hopes this is the start of a long career working with people with a disability.
“I will definitely carry on doing this. At the end of my traineeship I hope to get a job with Endeavour Foundation. All the staff and clients are wonderful people...I love it!” she said.
Endeavour Foundation’s Organisational and Employee Development Manager Ed Madigan believes the traineeship program is an important step for the future.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for students to learn the community, health and disability industries,” he said.
“It shows Endeavour Foundation’s commitment to the disability sector. We want to create awareness of our sector and to encourage youngsters to join this sector. We’re looking at it as building the future workforce.”
Endeavour Business College has been working with the Department of Training Queensland under the Healthy Futures initiative which aims to provide career pathways for school students across the community and health sector. Endeavour Foundation sponsors the trainees involved with the support of Government funding.
Endeavour Foundation supports more than 3,350 people with a disability throughout Queensland and in Sydney. The organisation provides accommodation, education, training, vocational and lifestyle opportunities to support people with a disability to lead ordinary lives.
Endeavour Business College was established last year and offers nationally-recognised qualifications.
It initially offered courses to Endeavour Foundation staff and volunteers to ensure the organisation’s team members were among the best-skilled in the disability sector. The college has since started offering its nationally-recognised tailored training courses outside the organisation, with the aim of improving the skills and abilities of staff across the disability sector.
College training is offered in partnership with registered training organisations such as Sunshine Coast TAFE.
