No Right Turn cover themselves in glory

A band which cites 1990’s grunge music among its influences may sound like an odd choice to perform live at a family-based entertainment event, but No Right Turn are no ordinary band.

This group from the south-side of Brisbane – Rochedale, Beenleigh, and Sunnybank - will play live to a potential audience of thousands at Endeavour Foundation’s Big Community Day Out at the South Bank Cultural Forecourt in Brisbane on May 15th.

They have such a polished array of cover songs that they can vary stage performances from a solo set, to a duo, to an acoustic three-piece, to the full four-piece version of the band.

The set-list can include everyone from Australian legends like Powderfinger and Paul Kelly to such international luminaries as The Beatles, U2 and Van Morrison, with some Foo Fighters, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Lenny Kravitz along the way.

According to Matt Murtagh, on guitar and keyboards, No Right Turn will lean towards the classic rock end of their covers spectrum to suit the occasion.

"It’s going to be a great day, and we’ll have something for everyone.

"We really enjoy playing the charity gigs and it means a lot to us to support Endeavour Foundation."

No Right Turn have been together for three years with Stephen Green on vocals and guitar, Michael Munce on bass, and Pete Shackleford on drums, making up the quarter.

Their career was given a major boost when they won the Jack Daniels Platform competition for cover bands, alongside The Replicants, in Brisbane last August.

"We had loads of exposure from that, "said Matt.

"It’s really taken off over the last eight months or so, and if it keeps going at this rate then we should really start to make a strong case for a regular place on the Brisbane music scene.

"We’ve been in Airlie Beach for a fortnight’s tour and, hopefully, it’s another step towards going full-time when we can start working on our own original material."
