Car donation has flood victim back on the road
After more than two months of renting cars or walking 40 minutes to and from work in the summer heat, Rocklea resident Nguyen Tran has a set of wheels- and air-conditioned comfort - thanks to a generous stranger..gif)
Nguyen, a Supervisor at Endeavour Foundation Industries Yeerongpilly which provides supported employment and specialised training to 91 people with a disability, lost her car when it was destroyed in the Brisbane floods in January, along with her house.
A few phone calls and 900km later, Nguyen has a 2001 Mitsubishi Lancer thanks to Kathy Breen, a member of Endeavour Foundation’s Sydney Area Committee.
Kathy responded to the organisation’s call for donations through the Endeavour Welfare Fund, which was set up to support Endeavour Foundation victims of natural disasters.
Kathy informed the organisation that she was willing to donate her station wagon to any flood victim who needed it.
“Having experienced the impact of natural disasters I know how difficult it is when you go without these items,” she said.
“I know having a car will make a huge difference for Nguyen.”
Nguyen was impressed with her new car, which Kathy drove all the way from Sydney to personally hand over the keys.
“This is much bigger and has electric windows and central locking, unlike the car I had. This has everything!” Nguyen said.
Registration and transfer fees were taken care of by the Endeavour Welfare Fund, which has so far provided financial assistance to more than 30 clients and staff, including supported employees, whose homes or belongings were damaged by the recent natural disasters.
The Fund has a target of $100,000 by the end of June.
The public can donate to the Fund at endeavour.com.au.
Endeavour Foundation CEO David Barbagallo said the donation and effort Kathy put into the handover was testament to the supportive Endeavour Foundation nature.
Endeavour Foundation supports more than 3,350 people with a disability and is this year celebrating its 60th anniversary.
