Opportunities for people with a disability

Woodchip off the old block to improve Endeavour Foundation’s garden
“I don't have a wooden heart” sang Elvis, and neither do the people at Parkside Timber of Wondai.
When staff at Endeavour Foundation's Learning & Lifestyle service in Kingaroy decided that they needed to spruce up the garden, they approached the sawmill to ask if they were in a position to donate some woodchip.
Parkside Timber's response was to send a tipper truck full of woodchip with an off-duty staff member making the delivery.
The mill hasn't had it easy recently and has had to lay-off staff due to building activity being reduced and the strength of the Australian dollar leading to imported timber being cheaper, but the Parkside Timber manager at Wondai, Ross Lakin, couldn't resist the call.
“We like to donate and, if the request is fair and reasonable, it's something we'll do,” Ross said.
“It helped that the owner of the Parkside Group, Robert Tapiolas, was with us when the request came in from Endeavour Foundation and he just said 'yes, let's do it, no worries' but we would have done it anyway.
“We like to help and we take requests from the community very seriously. It's important to us and Endeavour Foundation is a great cause.”
The woodchip duly arrived by truck which thrilled the Endeavour Foundation clients, like Brett Macleod.
“The garden will look a lot better and we can invite Lady Flo around for a morning tea one day,” Brett said.
“It will be a nicer place to have a barbecue when the summer comes.”
Endeavour Foundation has been celebrating its 60th anniversary throughout 2011 and is leading the way with the campaign for a National Disability Insurance Scheme which would allow all people with a disability to have access to a federally-funded system.
Note: Endeavour Foundation supports people with a disability in Kingaroy through its Learning & Lifestyle service, Endeavour Foundation Industries, in-home support and accommodation services.
