Spend a day in the life of a person with a disability
Endeavour’s Learning and Lifestyle Windsor will be opening their doors on Wednesday October 6 to showcase abilities and achievements of clients and invite the public experience a day at the service.
The public is encouraged to come and learn about people with a disability and create a more supportive and inclusive community, attendees will include students from nearby special schools.
Over half a million Australians have intellectual disability, 61% of people with intellectual disability have a severe or profound limitation in 'core' activities of daily living.
Learning and Lifestyle programmes support people with a disability to develop their daily living skills like communication, literacy and numeracy, safety, computer skills, cooking and grocery shopping are taught at the service.
Service Coordinator Karen Scull said the open day will highlight benefits of the Learning and Lifestyle and the public have the opportunity to join in on the activities.
“The support and skills developed by clients at the service can literally change their lives and provide increased quality of life,” said Karen.
One of the many success stories of the programme is Jacquie Maddison who achieved her personal goal of gaining paid independent employment.
Jacquie has an intellectual disability and needed a workplace that was able to support her needs, where staff are adequately trained in working with people with a disability.
Support staff worked with Jacquie and she is now proudly employed as a laundry assistant at the Holy Cross Laundry.
Spending a day in the life of a person with a disability is not only for the external public –Endeavour’s Walk a Mile program requires all Head Office staff to work at least one day a year at an Endeavour service.
Endeavour Foundation provides support, accommodation, training and vocational opportunities for more than 3,400 people with a disability across Queensland and in Sydney to help them lead an ordinary life.
