Sara brings muscle to Brisbane flood relief

While the Gold Coast escaped the horror of the recent floods, that didn’t stop residents playing a key role in emergency efforts.

Supported employees at Endeavour Foundation Industries Southport were proud to contribute to the flood preparation in Brisbane.

About 30 supported employees – people with a disability who receive employment, specialised training and development opportunities through Endeavour Foundation – provided almost 11,000 sandbags to Brisbane City Council for the city’s flood prevention.

Supported employees shovelled sand into the bags, weighed them and then attached a zip tie before loading the bags on to pallets for freight.

Sara Degen, 23, was among the supported employees and said her and her colleagues felt great satisfaction in knowing they were contributing to flood relief.

“It was a good way to help out the flooded communities. I enjoyed the work, knowing I was helping,” said Sara.

Endeavour Foundation Industries Southport also provided sandbags to Endeavour Foundation services. Several of the organisation’s services across Queensland were affected by the floods.

Sara has been with the Southport service for three years and particularly enjoys painting wooden stakes and pegs, along with the friendships she has formed at the service. Endeavour Foundation Industries provides supported employment, specialised training, development and social opportunities to more than 2,000 people with a disability to support them to lead ordinary lives.

The service fulfils orders for various businesses such as orders for timber stakes and pegs, packaging and industrial cleaning cloth.
