Redcliffe community gives gift of music to people with a disability
Music classes at Endeavour Learning and Lifestyle Redcliffe are about to get much more interesting – and noisy - with the addition of a set of congo drums and a glockenspiel* thanks to community donations.
The generous Redcliffe community has been working together to make purchase possible – the local Freemasons are donating $475 and Margate Music Shop is providing a hefty discount.
People who access the Learning and Lifestyle program are passionate about music – the program holds interactive classes where the participants, some who have difficulty communicating, use music to express themselves.
Acting Service Coordinator Julieanne Morris said as well as being a communication tool, their music classes are just plain fun!
“We have a good selection of percussion instruments – but it will be great to have the drums and glockenspiel,” said Julieanne.
“Even the people who access the service who aren’t really into music want to join in the class to have a bang on the drums and glockenspiel.
“Music provides a great group atmosphere to allow everybody to create something together.
“The kindness and generosity of the community has made this all possible – we are grateful to the Redcliffe community and especially to the Freemasons and Margate Music Shop.”
Listening to – and creating music can be beneficial as a tool to improve self confidence, coordination, gait, and balance.
Endeavour has 34 Learning and Lifestyle programs throughout Queensland – the programs offer personalised plans that are designed to support each person’s interests and goals.
The program provides people with a disability support to live as independently as possible and support community access to recreational, social and educational activities.
*A glockenspiel is a percussion instrument, similar to the xylophone; however, the xylophone's bars are made of wood, while the glockenspiel's are metal plates or tubes, thus making it a metallophone.
