Endeavour Foundation’s new Post-School services building was officially opened by Minister for Disability Services and Multicultural Affairs, The Hon. Annastacia Palaszczuk.

The service will make a massive difference in the lives of adults with an intellectual disability empowering them to learn essential social and independent living skills which most of us take for granted.

People with a disability are assisted by support staff to develop skills such as literacy, computer skills, money handling, cooking and hygiene.

The new wheelchair accessible service features a specially designed kitchen in which clients are supported to cook for themselves and a technology room with computers installed with specialist educational programs.

The spacious design allows support staff to lead discussion and tutorials in personal and fire safety in a modern and supportive environment.

CEO David Barbagallo said it was fitting this life-changing service was opened in north Queensland exactly 60 years after Endeavour Foundation held its first class for children with intellectual disabilities on a verandah in suburban Brisbane.

“This year, Endeavour Foundation marks its 60th anniversary, celebrating its beginnings as a school established by a passionate group of parents who refused to accept that their children with a disability could not be educated,” Mr Barbagallo said.

“Support such as that provided by Endeavour’s Post School Services program are a continuation of our mission to provide ongoing learning and training opportunities for people with a disability.

“This modern learning hub offers Endeavour Foundation much more scope in being able to support people with a disability to live an ordinary life.”

The Minister officially opened the service at a community ceremony and took the opportunity to meet clients and their families.

The service, including a total refurbishment of an existing building, was made possible with a $500,000 grant from Department of Communities.
