International symposium addresses abuse and neglect of people with a disability
Around 150 people from across the country will converge in Brisbane on Monday for a symposium on the abuse and neglect of people with a disability.
Attending the event will be people with a disability and their family members, policy makers, government agencies and statutory bodies, researchers and academics as well as service providers.
The two-day event will be an arena to share international perspectives on abuse and neglect of people with a disability as well as to develop links between research, policy and practice on such abuse and neglect.
“The issue of abuse and neglect is receiving comparatively little attention in the policy arena and there is a serious need for us to develop linked research, policy and practice frameworks,” said Nagadeva Higgins, Endeavour Foundation’s Senior Adviser on Challenging Behaviour and Complex Needs.
Key speakers for the symposium are Professor Hilary Brown from the UK and Dr Nancy Fitzsimons from the US.
Professor Brown was instrumental in the development of the UK policy responses to the abuse and neglect of vulnerable adults and works with the Council of Europe on abuse and neglect issues.
Dr Fitzsimons was the Principal Investigator and Project Director of several abuse prevention training and outreach initiatives in Illinois and Minnesota and is also author of Combating Violence and Abuse of People with Disabilities: A Call to Action.
The international symposium, titled Everybody’s Business: Stopping the Abuse and Neglect of People with Intellectual Disability, is a joint initiative between Griffith University and Endeavour Foundation and will be held on Monday and Tuesday (April 11 and 12) at Rydges Hotel, Southbank.
