Toowoomba store invites community in for thank you event

Endeavour Recycled Clothing Toowoomba will open its doors for a community morning tea next Thursday, March 10, to thank the generous people of Toowoomba for their efforts following the floods.

Floodwaters completely inundating the store on Monday January 10, destroying all stock was causing extensive damage to the store, which had opened for business last August.

When Lorelle returned to the store on the Friday following the floods to start the daunting task of cleaning, her spirits were lifted when she discovered the community was already waiting at the front door to help.

“About 70 people turned up that day to help out. I've never seen so many volunteers! I was overwhelmed by the response. I'm so grateful,” she said.

“We had local residents, including supported employees from Endeavour Foundation Industries Toowoomba, people from nearby businesses and general members of the public – a lot of whom had never even been in the store before but saw that we needed a hand.

“There were butchers supplying food, workers from the ADRA second-hand store who gave us a change of clothing, students from the University of Southern Queensland, volunteers from Rangeville Community Church, Work place Health and Safety, Endeavour Foundation – and I remember seeing Councillor Joe Ramia here amongst the crowd of volunteers too.”

The store re-opened last Friday, 25 February. To say thank you to the amazing volunteers who helped out during the massive – many of whom Lorelle had never seen before – the store will hold a morning tea next Thursday, 10 March, at 10.30am.

“We'd love to see everyone who helped out that day – I just want to see them to say a big thank you,” Lorelle said.

Two volunteers who plan on attending the morning tea are The Lazy Fisherman takeaway workers Todd and Kieren, who saved Lorelle and two volunteers who were trapped inside the store when it flooded.

Todd and Kieren swam across the “river” that had formed outside the store and forced the doors of the shop open before guiding the three to safety.

“We went under the water a few times but the boys helped us across the river that had formed outside the door,” Lorelle said.

“I'm just so grateful we all got out safely.”

The Endeavour Recycled Clothing store has undergone a massive overhaul since the floods, with new walls, carpet, electrical equipment, office equipment and a completely new retail fit out.
