Endeavour Foundation and Council bring new recycling service to Stanthorpe area
Southern Downs Regional Council has teamed with Endeavour Foundation Industries to provide a new recycling service to rural residents in the former Stanthorpe Shire Council area.
The initiative is the first recycling service of its kind in the area and offers residents the opportunity to help the environment by reducing the amount of waste going to landfill. Council distributed recycling bins this week to transfer stations in The Summit, Ballandean, Broadwater, Pozieres, Glen Aplin, Amiens and Thulimbah and the landfill site at Dalveen.
Each site has three recycling bins – one for glass bottles, one for cardboard/paper and one for plastic bottles.
The bins will be emptied by Endeavour Foundation Industries and items taken to their facilities at Warwick and Stanthorpe, where they will be sorted and recycled by staff and supported employees.
The two Endeavour Foundation Industries sites provide employment, training and development opportunities to 37 people with a disability.
“Our aim is to contribute to the environment by diverting more waste from landfill, while continuing to enhance the lives of people with a disability in the Stanthorpe and Warwick areas,” Endeavour Foundation CEO David Barbagallo said.
Residents are asked to flatten cardboard and paper and to wash and rinse plastic containers and remove lids, before placing them into the appropriate bins.
It is vital that residents do not put any plastic bags or rubbish into these bins, as this will contaminate the recycling.
For residents in the former Stanthorpe Shire Council area, large bulky items such as green waste, scrap metal and building materials, can be taken to the Stanthorpe landfill where no charge applies to domestic waste. This site is closed every Tuesday.
Endeavour runs various recycling operations at the Southern Downs Council’s Warwick and Stanthorpe transfer stations, which significantly reduce the amount of material going into landfill.
All proceeds raised through Endeavour Foundation Industries go to providing Endeavour’s various accommodation, education and employment opportunities to people with a disability, such as those in the Southern Downs region.
