Endeavour celebrates National Volunteer Week

To celebrate National Volunteer Week from 14 to 20 May, Her Excellency Quentin Bryce AC hosted a special Cocktail Party at Government House.

Among the guests were 16 volunteers from the recently-closed Endeavour Recycled Clothing Store at Graceville.

Endeavour’s Graceville volunteers had played a vital role in the running of the store for the past 20 years, raising over $250,000 for the organisation over that time.  Money that has enabled Endeavour to provide opportunities for people with a disability across Queensland.

Unfortunately, the Graceville store has been forced to close due to safety concerns and because a number of the volunteers were looking to retire.

Endeavour Foundation Volunteer Coordinator Leeanne Wellington said the black tie function at Government House was a great way to thank the Graceville workers, particularly Stella Sheard, who had been leading the group of volunteer locals since just after the store opened.

“Like so many volunteers, Stella committed her time, enthusiasm, knowledge and skills to help others,” said Ms Wellington.

“Sadly, volunteers are increasingly hard to come by as there are so many organisations competing for people who are prepared to donate their time, and fewer people prepared to make that commitment.”

The Endeavour Foundation is always on the lookout for volunteers across the State.  Whether people are interested in helping out in a Recycled Clothing Store or working with disabled supported employees in one of the 24 Business Services, there are ample opportunities.  It doesn’t matter what a person’s area of talent or expertise is, their unique skills will be welcome and greatly appreciated.
