Rally complete!
93 brightly festooned cars bombarded Kooralbyn Resort with noise, pomp
and ceremony, and 300 rambunctious Rally entrants arrived in their weirdest and
whackiest attire – from pirates, to angels, to Dolly Parton look-a-likes – each
competing for the last opportunity for attention.
The first entrants to make it passed the finish line were Shane Charles (Endeavour
Board Member) and Colin Desbrow from Toowoomba, in car number 81, 'Red Bull'.
While the team were not necessarily the Rally winners (scores are yet to be
finalised), they were the highest fundraisers of the event, raising $40,334.
The second highest fundraisers, and therefore second across the finish line, were
Cec Ivers and Greg Henderson from Emerald in car number 23, whose raised
$37,786.
Third was Nick Burton from Murarrie in car number 185, the 'IP Express, who raised
$19,387, and Norman Haupt, Bob Grant and Ian Doyle from Capalaba came fourth in
car number 17 ‘Vision Alert'.
The 10 day, 5,000km event was the 20th anniversary of Australia’s largest off-road
rally, and the auspicious occasion was commemorated by retracing the tracks of the
very first rally, which went from Toowoomba to Kooralbyn via Birdsville.
